Pushing Other People’s Buttons

When we become aware of our own buttons, we also become more aware that other people have sensitivities that cause them to react irrationally. In some cases, we may make what we think is an innocent remark that sets someone off. We often acknowledge this by saying, “Oops, I guess I touched a nerve.” But in other situations, we may not be so innocent. We may be vaguely aware that a given remark is offensive, but say it anyway to express our own annoyance. And sometimes, we may deliberately push another’s buttons as an outright provocation.

Becoming aware of other people’s buttons and refraining from pushing them is one of the ways in which we become more compassionate. And by taking responsibility for recognizing our own buttons and deactivating them, we reduce the amount of anger circulating out there in the world.
