Exercise: Describing Anger

In order to manage anger, you’ll need to recognize when it happens. What does anger look like and feel like to you? List your answers. Remember that the more specific they are, the more clarity you’ll gain.

To prime your thinking, read through the following list of descriptive words and phrases:

boiling

volcano

eruption

shouting

slamming doors

silence

tears

shaking fists

hitting

stony silence

Note that some of the items in this list refer to observable behaviors. Others are metaphors that describe the physical sensations associated with anger.

Now reflect on your list. Note the number of items that describe anger as unpleasant, violent, or potentially harmful. How much of your list consists of such negative descriptors? If they add up to a majority, then this indicates a negative attitude toward anger. Your habitual responses to anger might include

denying anger

fearing anger

feeling anger but not expressing it

feeling anger and expressing it in aggressive ways
