The magic that Goethe refers to and Murray alludes to is accessible only when you take a stand, turn away from the alternatives and get into positive action. And sometimes that requires a leap of faith.

An exercise I regularly do in my seminars demonstrates to participants that happiness is ignited by motion. In the first part of the exercise I ask everyone to stand up, walk around the room and introduce themselves to everyone else. They are to pretend they are in a bad mood and don’t care about the exercise or the other people at all. Interestingly, most people do this exercise with their heads down, shoulders slumped, making minimal eye contact, even though that wasn’t part of the instructions. There is also not much physical touch, and if people do shake hands it’s a small, weak gesture.

I then ask the group to stop and do exactly the opposite. This time they are to introduce themselves enthusiastically. They are to be excited and over the top. Again almost everyone in the room already knows how to do this and they will immediately lift their heads, push back their shoulders and make direct eye contact while vigorously shaking hands with or hugging their neighbours. Again I didn’t tell them to do that — it’s just the universally understood language of enthusiastic contact. From this simple exercise everyone realises the powerful impact of our physiology and that happiness and positivity are initially generated and inspired by our physiology. The way we choose to use our body determines how we show up in life. Happiness is ignited by motion.
