Take Sir Richard Burton, the British explorer and author (among other roles) famous in literary circles for his multivolume translation of the The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night, better known by its compressed title The Arabian Nights. In addition to that notable work, his bibliography includes an armful of travelogues, which required journeying through harsh places filled with people whose idea of a warm greeting was a hurled javelin. No wonder he was an expert swordsman.

Compared to that, how could anyone complain about taking a break from work to walk around the block a time or two? It comes with roughly 100 percent less chance of grisly death, unless you happen to live in a lion preserve.

Regular exercise burns body fat, improves sleep and energy levels, lowers blood pressure, and tones your “muscles” into muscles. The benefits for the brain include a reduction in stress, boosts in the brain’s levels of soothing serotonin and dopamine, and possible improvements in learning and memory retention. Exercise makes the brain work better, and intellectuals want their brains functioning at an optimum level.
