Chapter 19

Missing Aliens

DUKE, ISHIRO’SHEA, LILLY, AND PO’L—accompanied by the Father and his wife, Yumi—sprinted down the nondescript hallway, weapons drawn. The General had sent out four different search parties to track down the missing trio of alien visitors. They weren’t being picked up on any camera feeds and their bio signs weren’t properly input into the system; they were essentially ghosts. However, when Duke asked if they had a camera monitoring their room—and received a “no” from Munger—he volunteered to take his team to inspect. Probably just needed a nap, thought Duke. But since the Yehaso weren’t answering any of the attempts to reach them, the search party had to take every precaution necessary.

“It’s just down this corridor,” said Yumi. “On the right, the last door.”

Ishiro’s parents let the armed foursome take the lead. Duke slowly crept up to the open door and peeked around the doorframe. He signaled to his crew that what he saw—or didn’t see—was inconclusive. He needed a better look. He motioned for Lilly to cover him.

The anthropomorphic musk ox shot back a quizzical look, followed by a hulking shoulder shrug.

“What?” whispered Duke.

“Cover you with what?” Fired back Lilly, in an equally silent tone. “My fists?”

Duke tossed her his laser revolver. He wasn’t even sure if her hands were small enough to work it. I’m sure she’ll figure it out.

The bounty hunter drew Ol’ Betsy. He crouched down and then sprung into the entryway of the Yehaso’s quarters. Lilly rotated in behind him. Ishiro’shea and Po’l followed, their blades in attack position.

“Empty,” muttered Duke.

“And clean. Untouched,” added Po’l.

“There has to be something,” the bounty hunter began. “A note. A clue of some sort. Something.”

“Or they just didn’t come back to the room,” said Lilly. “Maybe they went outside for a walk?”

“What? A leisurely stroll around New Tokyo? That’d be a first,” snapped Duke.

“You saw it yourself, Duke, it looks much different now. It was green and quite striking,” Lilly reminded the bounty hunter.

“We’ve made great improvements, Duke,” chimed in Yumi, having now made her way into the room.

“Fine, fine, fine. I’m sure one of Munger’s scouting parties went outside to see if they were out there, taking a smoke break and playing leapfrog or whatever,” replied Duke.

The conversation was halted by the sound of gunfire. But not Earth guns. Duke knew those pulse sounds. Four I’s. The barrage was followed by an even more unpleasant sound—the Father hitting the ground with a thud and a pain-riddled groan. Yumi shrieked. Ishiro’shea rushed to his father’s aid, but the tough Irishman had already managed to crawl to safety. Duke leapt over the bleeding statesman and into the doorway. He saw four Four I’s infantrymen at the other end of the hallway, trying to secure it. But secure it for whom?

“The General is going to kill me for this,” Duke said as he pulled the trigger on Ol’ Betsy. The Widowmaker let out a monstrous bellow that shook the walls in the corridor and culminated in a massive explosion at the other end.
