STEP 10: DON’T BE OFFNDED WHEN YOUR CALL GOES STRAIGHT TO VOICEMAL

Most younger Millennials and GenZs only use their phones as telephones under specific circumstances. This is not (always) because they have an aversion to actually speaking to people, it’s just a new form of social civility.

The truth is that most younger people feel it is more polite and considerate to send a text (or email) because it allows the recipient to respond on their own time, as opposed to a phone call, which demands their attention at a moment that might not be convenient.

This doesn’t mean you can’t ever talk on the phone with your younger friend/son/daughter/niece/nephew—it just means that unless you’ve scheduled the call in advance, you’re probably going straight to voicemail. And while we’re on the subject, young people never listen to their voicemails. (Duh, I saw the missed call and know I’m supposed to call you back.)

Time for an update: Save yourself the aggravation and don’t take this personally. See Phone Call Thought Catalog on the next page for an expanded explanation of what exactly a young person is thinking when the phone rings.
