For the Coach

Reflect on your knowledge of metaphors in general; seek to increase your repertoire of good, business-relevant metaphors so that pulling them out at the right moment comes easily to you.

Look for metaphors in a leader’s feedback, draw the leader’s attention to them, and help the leader translate a key metaphor into one or more action steps.

Listen for metaphors used by the leader during coaching conversations, draw attention to them, and help translate them into productive action.

Think about metaphors that you as the coach can use in order to really get the leader’s attention and influence him or her toward productive action in a specific area; in some cases you may have to try out one or two metaphors with a particular leader before one sticks.

Have multiple categories of metaphors to pull from as examples when helping someone craft his or her own.

Be prepared to run a reality check on a person’s metaphor to make sure it both makes practical sense and does not perpetuate the issue the leader is working on.
