The next line from Jones to the two reporters detonated the explosion that blew up the Cowboys:

“There are 500 coaches who could have won the Super Bowl with our team.”

There was no Twitter, no social media, but after only a few hours Johnson was made aware of what Jones said. He not only checked out of the hotel, he checked out mentally. He was done with Jones. He jumped in his car and drove back to the Keys.

One week later, after having some preliminary talks about trying to make it work, Johnson demanded Jones settle his contract. Jones gave him $2 million to disappear. “There is nothing you can trade me for those five years we had together and what we went through together and how it worked out,” Jones said. “There is nothing you can give me to have one more day of it.”

Jones went home late that night. Gene was already in bed. She knew Jerry better than anybody and never could understand why he couldn’t leave well enough alone. It wasn’t like Jerry and Gene socialized with Jimmy and his girlfriend, Rhonda, a former hairstylist who later became his second wife. Gene wasn’t losing a close friend because her husband fired Jimmy. But she knew how nervous Jerry was putting together the sale and how much Jimmy was instrumental in making it work.

“I come home, and of course Gene has been watching the news and finds out about it. I lay down. It’s as silent as anything you can imagine,” Jones said in his Hall of Fame speech. “After I laid there a minute, she just looks over and said, ‘You can’t stand it, can you? You just absolutely, when it gets going, you just got to get in it and mess it up.’”

Jerry was not in the mood to explain himself.

“I just shut up and went to sleep,” he said.

He earlier had thought back to a conversation he had with his father after he first bought the team.

“My daddy called me,” Jones said. “I had consulted with him, but I hadn’t really shared with him the significant amount of money involved or the significance of what the Cowboys could be. My motivational fear was to lay an egg.”

This is how he recalled the conversation with his father:

“You better be successful or you will be known to the whole country as a failure the rest of your life,” Pat Jones said.

“Dad, you really made my day,” Jerry said.

“I didn’t mean it that way. You cannot drop the ball here. There is too many people looking at you,” Pat said.

That made a lifetime impact on Jerry. Was he doomed to ultimately fail because he couldn’t handle success and dumped the best coach in the NFL?

Four months later, Johnson was sitting on his boat parked in the backyard dock at his house in Tavernier in the Florida Keys. He was relaxed and not expressing any regret about leaving Dallas, but clearly was upset at feeling disrespected by Jones. After
