CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

TESSA

Officer Allison seemed to have cleared the area, but she could never be too careful.

Maybe it was paranoia, but she couldn’t help but wonder if he’d find and keep Brett hostage to get to her. She just might deserve something like that. Maybe he had another plan to go after them later. Allison wouldn’t want to lose his officers or take too many unnecessary risks to get to her. If he acted too rashly, he’d lose the trust of everyone.

Stop. You are not thinking rationally.

Tessa wished Professor Parker had survived, because she could see through all the emotional storm clouds that drifted over reality. She taught critical thinking skills, after all. But she was lying dead back in Aunt Karsten’s house, and the evidence of Chuck’s crime had burned right along with the remnants of her newly shattered life.

Tessa peeked out the front door of the ranch home and checked up and down the street.

Only emptiness greeted her.

She thought of going back to Reem’s big stone house, where they had supplies, but the police must have caught on that they could use that food to help the survivors of the city. They’d return for it, and Tessa couldn’t blame them. They were here to protect and serve, after all.

They wouldn’t hurt Brett unless he brandished his weapon at them first.

“He’ll be back.” Alex stood right behind her in the living room of the ranch. “They just had to walk to campus, and there’s a long way around they can take that doesn’t go past the frat houses. So long as Eliza and Louie stay out of sight, I doubt anyone will know who they are.”

She swallowed. “I know they will.” Tessa pushed out the words as she clutched her rifle, not wanting to let go. The police could be anywhere, and the wrong person could flag them down and think they were looters. “Give me a blanket. That’ll help, and I think the temperature has dropped to the low fifties, at least.”

The weather was cold enough to don a blanket, but not yet chilly enough to require a coat. It wasn’t as if heavy winter gear was a common thing in this part of the country. The people of this town didn’t even own any snow removal equipment.

Alex draped a blanket around her a few minutes later, and she took comfort in the weapon underneath. Mikey also had a rifle, but he tucked it into his baggy jeans, and Alex had kept only a pistol, which he tucked into his belt. Reem hadn’t bothered with any weapons at all, and she feared he’d left his gun for the cops to find.

And he’d also let them know their group had weapons.

“Don’t you have something?” Tessa faced him.

“We need someone to march in front and look harmless,” Reem said.

She stared hard at him, hating her own attitude, and said, “That can make you look like a target, too. I think it’s best to go with the ‘we don’t know how dangerous these people are’ tactic.
