Chapter Seven: Beneath Her

I glare at my wife as we sit across from each other at our dining room table. Things between us have been eerily silent since yesterday afternoon, but now I believe I am ready to discuss with her what I have been thinking.

“You shouldn’t have done that with him, Sarah. We are married and we’ve made vows to each other.”

“I’m sorry, Jacob. Really I am. I don’t know what came over me or why I spoke to you like that after you discovered us together.” She wipes her eyes with a handkerchief. “I promise it will never happen again.”

Frowning, I tell her, “It will happen again if you don’t break your habit.”

“My habit?”

Pointing toward her arm, I continue, “You still wear that damned thing even though you fucked him for it, Sarah. So, it’s not as if you’ve given up what you’ve been doing with Trevor or the other men you’ve been with.”

She stares at me for a moment, but doesn’t argue that I’m wrong in my assumption concerning the other men. My wife understands me well enough to know that my anger can be harsh, and I’m sure she doesn’t want to give me reason to yell at her again.

“It’s just a piece of jewelry,” she finally replies.

“A piece of jewelry he gave you so that he could fuck you,” I respond.

Her face turns pink. “Please stop saying it that way, Jacob. You know it bothers me to hear it said that way.”

Raising an eyebrow, I ask, “What am I saying that bothers you, Sarah?”

She turns her blue eyes to look into mine. “You keep saying that four-letter word. It bothers me and you know it does. I’ve never liked hearing it, and the way you wield it against me like a sword isn’t very gentlemanly.”

I laugh. “Well, it wasn’t very ladylike to go and fuck another man, was it?”

“What do you want from me?” she asks after seeing that I won’t give in to her simple request.

Taking a breath first, I begin, “For one thing, you can send that bracelet back to that man.”

Her eyes widen. “The bracelet? Why?”

“You know why, Sarah. It reminds me of him and what he did with you. Besides, you got it from someone else and not from me.”

Shaking her head, she says to me, “I like this bracelet, Jacob. Surely you can think of something else I could give away. Perhaps my fur coat?”

“You don’t like that damned thing anyway,” I retort. “What would it matter to you if you gave it away?”

“That’s the point.”

“No, that’s not the fucking point,” I say while invoking the same word Sarah dislikes. “The point is that you need to make amends to me for having sex with another man. That’s the point, my love.”

She looks at the bracelet on her wrist. “And this will make all things right between us?”

“Not completely, no,” I reply. “There’s more.”

Her face turns pink.
