Sitting on the edge of the bed, Peter wrapped an arm around Blaise’s shoulders again, the other closing over Blaise’s hand to guide the water to his lips. After a few sips, Blaise nodded and Peter placed the glass on the bedside cabinet. Feeling the shivering lessen, Peter looked at Blaise’s ashen face and took a deep breath, wondering again what had the power to affect his cocksure lover so viscerally. “Want to talk about it?”
“Not really,” Blaise replied honestly. There wasn’t really anything to talk about, just a series of flashes, feelings almost, and that sick-to-his-stomach dread that only the sadistic aliens could inspire. He certainly didn’t want to tell the Admiral about them!
“Let me rephrase that,” Peter said dryly. There was no way he was letting Blaise off without an explanation for such aberrant behavior.
“Something obviously affected you very strongly. I want to know what it is.”
Blaise grimaced, but accepted the decree. He didn’t really have much other choice. “It’s a recurring nightmare,” he began slowly, trying to put into words the amorphous terror that struck him. “I hear screaming—my first mate, Garrett, who was killed in an attack on my ship a few years ago. I didn’t see him killed. I just heard these hideous screams.” Blaise never did see Garrett’s body, but he could guess what had been done to him. The Gavenelians were experts at inflicting pain on their victims. “In the dream, I’m trying to get to him, to save him, but I can’t see anything.
There’s just the sickening smell of death and his never-ending screams.”
Peter’s lips tightened at Blaise’s description. The death of a shipmate, especially a violent death, was never easy to take, but the intensity of Blaise’s reaction suggested this Garrett might have been more than just a member of his crew. Peter’s own reaction to that thought was one he didn’t particularly care to explore. “Is that why you were working alone?” he asked, his voice sounding neutral—he hoped.
Blaise shrugged. “I didn’t ever find anyone else to replace him,” he explained. “On a small ship, on long runs, you’ve got to get along with your crew or you’ll end up killing each other. I guess I’m particular.”
The fact that he was never completely convinced the Gavenelians had stopped searching for their favorite toy was additional incentive to work alone. He wouldn’t put anyone else through what he’d suffered if he could help it.
