Josh
Rain started to fall, dampening the brothers standing outside Annaâs shop.
Jake was fuming. âJosh, how could you do that?â
What am I missing here?
âDo what?â
âAll of it,â snapped Jake. âDana bloody Blake, of all people, and in front of Nate. What the hell is wrong with you? You know what she did to him, and then you go and buy Honeybee. Could you be any more thoughtless, Josh? Totally unbelievable!â
âAs I keep telling you, I did not kiss Dana Blake. She kissed me. I was standing there minding my own business when she suddenly appeared from nowhere and pushed her mouth onto mine.â He turned to Anna for some help.
He saw her eyebrows move upwards a touch.
âItâs true,â he added. âI was staring at the post box.â He pointed over to the small red letterbox built into the stone wall at the end of the road. âI was visualising a painting. She just kissed me. I was in a zone. It wasnât until she pulled away and I saw her smirk over my shoulder that I realised what had happened.â
Jake stepped inside the doorway of the shop to shelter from the rain that was getting heavier. âYou had better sort this mess out, Josh.â
Josh wiped the water from his forehead. âYou were the one who wanted me to settle down somewhere, so I bought a cottage. Here, Jake, of all places, I bought one here, and now everyoneâs lost the plot.â
Anna peered around Jakeâs arm. âJosh, Joey has been saving up to buy a cottage here for years. She was so excited when one became available, but mostly because Honeybee has always been her favourite. You just bought her dream home.â
âAnd you did it by outbidding her,â said Jake.
Oh, please, tell me you are winding me up.
He could tell by Jakeâs expression that Anna was telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
âHow much extra did you pay?â asked Jake.
Josh already knew that even if he said one penny, his brotherâs angry glare wouldnât soften. âFifty grand for her to sign on the dotted line straight away with no fuss.â
Annaâs mouth gaped.
Disappointment washed across Jakeâs face. âThereâs no way Joey would have been able to match or beat that.â
Josh flapped his arms to his sides. âI didnât know she was buying it. Wendall never said. Loretta didnât tell me. I didnât know about this. I was just trying to secure the deal and get it wrapped up as quickly as possible. Loretta had already packed up and moved out days ago. Why didnât anyone tell me then? I didnât do this to hurt Joey. I did it to stick around. To show her Iâm sticking around.â
âPerhaps you should tell her that,â said Anna, rolling her eyes in the direction of Honeybee Cottage.
âPerhaps you should tell her now before she destroys the place,â said Jake. âSheâs got the keys, and she wasnât about to happily move in.â
Oh, shit!
Josh ran as fast as he could all the way up to Honeybee Cottage.
