Chapter Fourteen:

Camel thieves

As I head back to the subway, I find Eighth Avenue choked by a hundred people on line.

What on earth...? Looking up gives no clue: they appear to be queuing up outside one of the TV station offices.

This could be fun. I get on the end of the line.

Bucky appears beside me. “What are we waiting for?”

I flash him a smile. “Let’s find out.”

“I could find out for you.”

“Don’t you dare.” I hunch my shoulders. “This day’s been awful enough. I need a surprise.”

“Suit yourself,” and Bucky proceeds to sit on a parked car looking at something in his hands.

After five minutes, as more people file onto the line behind me, I turn to him. What are you doing?

He raises the paper, and I laugh, drawing dirty looks. Bucky’s holding a Heavenly Times.

“I only get it for the Sudoku.” He returns his attention to the puzzle.

The line inches forward. By now I’ve determined it involves a movie version of a novel called The Camel Thief. We’re nowhere near a theater, but if it’s new, maybe we’re trying for tickets to a premiere.

“Darn. I’ve done this one before.” The paper vanishes. “At least the line is moving.”

Shortly we’re adjacent to a magazine stand. My toes tell me they’re frozen, but not frozen enough to trump my curiosity. My breath frosts away from me, but hiding in my pockets, my hands are warm. I’ve got the canvas bag with the auto part under my right arm, tucked down: the native New Yorker stance.

While I scan the crowd, Bucky scans magazine headlines. “Hey, ten things you can do to spice up your evenings! Oh, wait, they don’t mean chili powder. Five things that will drive him crazy! Oh, wait, they don’t mean leaving your socks on the floor. Hey, they asked two hundred guys what lights their fire! Oh, wait, they don’t mean charcoal briquettes.”

I let off a long sigh. Bucky peers at me. “Are you still worried? I doubt Max would fire you. You’re here because he doesn’t want to do something he’ll regret. This will relax you: pictures of chocolate cake on three different covers.” Bucky zips in front of me. “Did you know chocolate cake on a cover instantly sells twenty percent more magazines? If they could, editors would put a picture of chocolate cake on every one.”

I force a smile. “Even US News?”

“Especially US News. Ten ways chocolate cake is patriotic: five ways to drive your congressman crazy by lighting his fire.” Wings spread, he glides to the roof of the newsstand. “If I asked for a pretzel, would you get me one?”

I’m very sensible. “You don’t eat.”

“But they’re warm and soft, and they make you feel like a kid.” He puts into my head a picture of me holding a steaming pretzel wrapped in a paper napkin.

I muster a smile. “Thanks.”

When we get to the window, a woman takes my name and hands me a pamphlet and two tickets. Free. I step aside to remedy my ignorance.
