Qrora sniffed the air as he stepped out of the rover. “Helmets stay on,” he said. “I can smell them.” Sweat. An oil he’d recently learned humans used for firearms. Humans had been here after the base personnel fled. He stepped away from the rover and ordered his forces to fan out.

After some quick research from Gway, Qrora and Sqrauw found out the base was actually home to some of the most destructive weapons on the continent. Nuclear missiles that could reach almost anywhere in the world and only took minutes to launch. Naturally, the security director wanted to establish control over the missiles, if only to end the threat against them.

Although Qrora agreed with the mission, Sqrauw’s motives seemed off. Surely, the humans on the landmass would have used the missiles if they saw them as a threat. Secondly, the shiplords, matriarchs, and landing captains all agreed that the planet should be kept as intact as possible to include infrastructure built by the humans. According to Gway, the missiles would render an entire region unlivable for decades, as well as annihilate a large area.

Qrora wondered why humans would even build weapons like this if they were supposed to use them on each other on the surface. Apparently, in the past, weaker versions of these weapons ended the most destructive war humanity had ever seen, only for the winners to enter an arms race and point said weapons at each other. Qrora’s conclusion? Humans were nuts but would probably lose their infighting in the face of an existential threat like the Blacktide.

Or the M’Nok-Taal.

Qrora swiveled his head. He needed to focus. Dangerous humans were afoot.

“Check the buildings,” he said. “Slow and steady; let’s play this safe.” As the first team ran into a building, Qrora stopped the second team from following them. “Walk the perimeter. Make sure nothing that isn’t us gets out.”

His ear comm buzzed. “In all my research, it looks like the humans keep these weapons under tight security,” Gway said. “I doubt we’ll be able to get access this time, but if you can secure a hard drive that was a part of their network, I should be able to find out how to get access.”

Qrora snorted. “And you can’t do that remotely?”

“There’s no power, bonehead,” Gway responded. “Besides, it’s easier to do when I’m connected to it.”

Qrora released an annoyed hiss when he thought he heard a door slam. Or a gunshot.

“Building team, is anything happening?” he asked.

“Negative,” they replied.

“Good, I need you guys to snatch a computer or two. Gway will update you with more information.” That sound again. “Perimeter team, go investigate the noises. Something’s off.”

He gripped his spike rifle a little tighter. The rover driver had his own weapon drawn and was looking around.

A cold wind blew through the base. Qrora caught a whiff of the meaty odor. A sweaty human. He cocked his head in the direction of the smell. After gesturing for the driver to follow him, they slowly advanced on the source.
