Colorful Writing

We are indebted to Mr. Andrew Pudewa of the Institute for Excellence in Writing for helping to teach us how to explain good writing to our students.

Consider this: How many ways can you say said?

Or, what's a more exciting way to say ran ?

A typical composition of one of my younger children might read: “The dog was brown. He was soft. His eyes were brown. His paws were big.”

There are many more interesting words! Mr. Pudewa suggests posting lists around the room, or having them for the back of the child's notebook. The lists contain alternatives to commonly overused words, like said, like, go, get, pretty, see, big and others. When one of these “banned words” (to use a phrase coined by Mr. Pudewa) is found in a composition, have your child choose a better alternative. If they cannot think of a better word, this is an optimal time to introduce a thesaurus.

Continue to ask them to expand their descriptions and to think of more interesting words. Lists of alternatives to overused adverbs and other parts of speech can also be added to the child's growing arsenal of writing tools.
