Chapter Eleven

“You have to make your life here now, sis. Unless you think you’re going back to DC to work, and we’re all hoping you won’t do that.” Jenny sifted a light sprinkling of flour over the ball of sugar cookie dough she was rolling out. Easter cookie baking was a family tradition, and for the first time in years, all five Weaver women were present in Gram’s big warm kitchen. The Weavers brought baskets of decorated cookies to first responders every Easter week—and this year, the triplets were making deliveries to the two firehouses, the police station, and the Emergency Department at St. Mark’s Hospital. After spending time in line at the post office to mail a faulty part back to a manufacturer for her dad, and watching a bedraggled clerk deal with a frustrated customer, Jazz suggested adding the postal workers to their list, so they had a new stop this Easter.

The tip of Jo’s tongue showed between her teeth as she carefully piped white icing onto the tail of a pink bunny-shaped cookie. “There! How cute is this little guy?” She smiled down at the cookie. “Jen’s right. Tell Megan yes. You have as much right to be on the town council as anyone else. And you can’t worry about Marilyn Pierce and all her crap. If you have to testify, you’ll go testify, get it over with, come back home, and the press be damned.” She took a sip of wine, which was always a part of family cookie-baking day whatever the season.

Jazz slid hot cookies from a tray she’d just pulled from the oven onto cooling racks at the end of the counter. “Mom, you’ve been unusually quiet through this whole conversation. What do you think?” She handed off the baking tray to her grandmother, who stood by with oven mitts, ready to wipe it down for the next batch.

Seated at the antique kitchen table that was covered with a homey red-and-white-checked tablecloth, Lynn glanced up from the basket she was lining. Their mom’s job was decorating the baskets they filled with treats, and this year, she’d outdone herself, choosing pastel-painted baskets and sewing large liners from spring-themed fabrics. Jazz’s heart warmed as she watched Lynn’s deft fingers tucking the pretty fabric into each of the four baskets.

Lynn gave a satisfied exhale as she smoothed the cloth in the bottom of the last basket. “Honey, you’re the only one who knows whether you’re back in town for good. But if you accept, you’d better plan on being here for at least the next year, which is how much time is left in Bob’s term. Frankly, if you serve out his term and split, that would be kind of a crummy thing to do. Whoever runs for mayor next year, when Meg’s term is up, will need the full support of the folks who want to see River’s Edge remain vital.” She tore open a package of raffia shreds and dropped a couple of handfuls into each basket, spreading them around to make a nest.
