Chapter 4

He should have taken her picture. Declan looked around his studio space in the mill, more than a little annoyed with himself for even considering packing things up. Enough with the running, laddie. Apparently, the world isn’t big enough for the two of ye to get lost in, after all.

He sat down at his computer and opened the file containing the photos he’d shot that predawn morning a week earlier. He’d been useless since. Done nothing but obsess over what he was going to do about things. About Katie. About himself. He’d managed to bollocks it all up once again, but when he’d finally shoved his frustration aside, he knew at the very least they weren’t done talking about it yet. That was all he’d allowed himself, the hope for a conversation, or ten if that’s what it took to get them to a place where they were, at the very least, at peace with each other.

And at best?

He refused to think about that. To let himself want more. He’d gone back into the cabin that morning without any sense of what Cassian would do or say. He was still grappling with the enormity of what had just happened, of seeing Katie, talking to her, finally, after so many years. He wouldn’t have blamed Cash for pretty much any response he cared to give. He’d hurt the man’s sister. Again, quite obviously, from the manner in which she’d departed. Even if it wasn’t intentional either time.

To his surprise, Cash had merely shaken his head and said, “Don’t be a horse’s arse. Fix it.” And then he’d headed out, his bag already packed.

“Any advice?” Declan had called out as Cash walked to his car.

Cash had tossed his bag into the back seat, then leaned on the open driver-side door. “Stay. Talk. Then keep talking until you figure things out.”

Declan could have pointed out that Cash was the worst at following his own advice, especially right at that moment, but the timing seemed a bit off. So, he’d given his brother-in-arms a nod, and the two had parted. Declan had gotten a short text from Cash later that evening, from the airport.
