Strong ale
Often brewed for special occasions, strong ale is best enjoyed in moderation. Most will benefit from extended conditioning and aging.
Appearance Light copper to deep red, with a lasting off-white head. Sometimes slightly hazy.
Taste Varies by style but usually spicy and malty, often with fruit flavors from the fermentation process.
Aroma Little or no hop aroma, with malt and caramel characters.
Strength 6–9% ABV
English strong ales are often spiced with festive herbs and spices to create a delicious, complex beer. They are strong and deep amber in color.
Belgian strong ales, which are brewed all year round, are pale in color and have distinct spicy flavors and aromas from the unique yeast strains.
