CHAPTER TWELVE

MATT EMPTIED ANOTHER garbage can into the black bag he held. The house was slowly spiraling into a pigsty without Laurel there to keep order. He’d always helped out, but she was definitely the driving force in keeping order in their home. After dragging himself to church that morning, he’d figured he might as well fill the day with a bunch of other things he didn’t want to do.

After gathering up the garbage he went through all the mail that had piled up, setting aside things that looked important. He was surprised there weren’t more bills but figured Laurel must get most of them electronically. As he sat at the table, papers in hand, Matt realized they needed to deal with the logistics of this situation. Everything was tied together. They had a joint banking account. Both their names were on the mortgage of the house. The vehicles were the only thing they each held separately. Bills still needed to be paid, and while Laurel had done all that before, it wasn’t fair to expect her to continue to take care of everything now.

Matt scooped the papers back up and set them on the counter. He’d deal with them later. As he stood in front of the fridge trying to figure out what to have for supper, the doorbell rang. Frowning, Matt closed the fridge and headed for the front door.

He jerked the door open, planning to tell whoever was there he didn’t want what they were peddling. Instead, he froze in surprise when he saw Devon standing on the front step.

“Hey! What are you doing here?” Matt asked.

“Laurel called me,” Devon said. “Can I come in?”

Matt nodded and stepped back to let his friend into the house. “Don’t mind the mess. Laurel was obviously the one who kept things afloat around here.”

Matt led the way into the living room. He piled up the blankets and pillows onto the end of the couch and motioned for Devon to sit down. “I suppose she called to ask you to try to change my mind.”

Devon shook his head. “Actually, she said she loved you and was worried about you being alone.”

At the words, Matt swallowed hard. “I’m doing okay.”

Devon glanced around the room, his gaze falling on the pile of bedding Matt had moved. “We’re best friends, buddy. I am not here to lecture or judge you for what’s happened. I want to support you and be a sounding board if you need to talk. Like Laurel, I love you, and I am just crushed at what has happened with you two.”

“She told you she was pregnant?” Matt asked.

“Yes. Or rather, she said something had happened that you couldn’t accept, and I guessed what it was.”

“You know my past. You know why I feel this way. I can’t change all that just because she got pregnant. Don’t you think I wish I could be the father she wants for this baby?”

Devon lapsed into silence for a minute then sighed. “You know, these fears you have aren’t just specific to you.
