Note: The 1950 to 1975 time periods rely on seventy-two film reviews per year, double that of the other time periods.
The first group is designated as consisting of “high art” terms that imply an erudite assessment and expert judgment in the context of the evaluation of culture. These words are: “art,” “brilliant,” “genius,” “inspired,” “intelligent,” “master,” and “work.” The second group is designated as consisting of “critical” terms, words that are used in the analysis of texts. These words are: “composition,” “genre,” “irony,” “metaphor,” “satire,” “symbol,” and “tone.”
Table 4.1 presents the count of “high art” terms, “critical” terms, and the total of the two. The counts are not adjusted for the different number of reviews analyzed in the 1950-75 period, when 72 reviews are sampled rather than the 36 in other periods. In order to draw any conclusions about the trends found in the results, we must first account for the greater sampling around the period of interest. Table 4.2 does this by first presenting the information needed to standardize the counts by time period. The second column presents the total number of words written in the reviews. The third column then presents the mean number of words per review by dividing the total words by 36 in 1925-45 and 1980-85, and by 72 in 1950-75.
