BY THE END OF THIS CHAPTER, you’ll be ready to design and test your own RET strategy. First, we need to touch on a few more elements of a successful endurance strategy. Earlier, I mentioned that you’ll need to make time for more than your primary endurance activity. You may become overwhelmed when you’re trying to balance the demands of life with training, and now I’m sauntering in, asking you to add more. In the past, recreational athletes didn’t put much thought into warm-ups, cool-downs, mobility, strength training, and rest. What coaches and runners now know is that these elements are all critical for longevity and injury-free participation in endurance sports. I firmly believe that mobility, strength, and rest are just as important as your swimming, biking, running, rowing, or climbing activities. Mobility and strength are not “extras” that you add in if you have the time. And, rest is not optional.

The topics discussed in this chapter are foundational. They are not like the bow on the top of the package, there for decoration. These are things that will make you stronger and more resilient as you pursue your passion.
