Chapter Twelve

It was the fourth day of the mini-golf tournament, and obviously, that took precedence over everything else. The director of the retirement complex could be a suspect in embezzlement and murder, the apocalypse could be minutes away, but none of it mattered; the show must go on.

“What, you want Sourpuss to win the game?” Edie said the next morning.

After our coffee and cake talk not that many hours ago, we went to sleep, and I came back to Edie’s first thing in the morning, while Gran was still sleeping.

Now, I stood next to Edie in her living room, sipping coffee and watching the locksmith work on the broken door. Thankfully, only the lock was damaged, not the wooden door itself. Edie had called for an emergency repair, and the locksmith arrived promptly.

I offered to pay, but Edie declined. She told me she pitied me for needing to rely on money from the Leonardi cases. Truth be told, I pitied myself too. Not to mention it was unsettling that a retired septuagenarian I'd only met a couple of months ago felt the need to cover for me financially. But since it was often her fault that we got into trouble, I let her foot the bill.

“Of course I don’t want her to win,” I replied, taking another sip of coffee. “It just seems like we have more important things to do than a silly mini-golf game.”

“Yes, I know everything we do around here seems silly and uncool to you, but let me remind you, you wouldn’t be having half this much fun without us,” Edie said. “It’s not like I’m holding you back from some exciting life for a thirty-year-old. I’ve never seen you hanging out with people your age, going clubbing, shopping, or anything like that. All you do is sit around the house with Dorothy all day. These silly games are what actually bring you back to life. I don’t know what happened to you back home, with your ex-boyfriend and all, but it must have been really traumatic for you to shun the outside world like this.”

I froze with my coffee cup mid-air and swallowed hard. I had to admit, I was holding back tears, and it was only 9:30 in the morning. As naive as Edie always seemed, she was surprisingly quick-witted and observant. Once again, she hit the nail on the head with her analysis and observation. I just hoped she didn’t notice anything she shouldn’t have about Gran’s and my real identities.

I refused to let this be the moment for my first good cry in what felt like years. So, I swallowed hard again and took another big gulp of coffee.

“This is quite a mess, Mrs. Donovan,” Locksmith Guy remarked as he installed the new lock. “How on earth did this happen? Burglars?”

The guy was a bit on the plump side, with a receding hairline and a stuffy mustache. I could see his butt crack peeking out as he bent down. In a way, he reminded me of Leonardi.
