Zyrona, Talos

Anika cursed under her breath as she, Logan, and Zoze carried Porro's medical bed onto the hospital rooftop where Saskia worked. The Manticore’s medical beds were far superior and could levitate.

Unlike Anika and her companions, the team of doctors and nurses who greeted them did not wear hazmat suits. The team checked on the very sick Porro, while others took blood samples from the crew. Piercing their PPE with the syringes annoyed Anika.

Since no one was infected, they admitted Porro and promised to help him recover.

One doctor turned to Anika and the others. “You should rest. Your friend, Doctor Saskia, will keep you updated on his condition.”

Anika’s concern for Porro weighed heavily on her. “Why are you not wearing PPE?”

“Zyrona is under quarantine.”

“All of it?”

“Yes. Did you not see the high crystalline walls on your way over?”

Zoze, Anika, and Logan exchanged looks and shook their heads.

“Maybe because it’s transparent.”

“It’s waterborne, though,” Zoze said.

“We localise our water. It comes from the Zyrona Springs in our mountains.”

“That’s why we took blood samples from you,” another doctor said.

“Yes,” said the first. “Sorry if this deems your PPE ineffective. Let my colleague fetch brand new PPE for your journey out of here, if you take it.”

A woman rushed off, then reappeared minutes later and handed them three new hazmat suits, which Anika, Zoze, and Logan accepted with gratitude.

Anika gently touched Logan’s arm. “Logan, we should get some rest. They’ll take good care of Porro. We’ll be more help to him once we’ve recharged ourselves.”

Logan nodded, his reflecting amber eyes glinting under the light of the white sun.

To Anika’s surprise, Zoze slipped her hand into Logan’s. Perhaps Zoze’s kiss had been true. Anika could see the attraction. Apart from needing dentist work, he had a muscular body, a lean waist, and a rugged but sexy appearance.

She yearned for Jaxon.

Leaving their stolen spaceship on the roof, they followed the hospital staff to a nearby visitor's hotel.

Anika lay in the hotel room, unable to sleep. Her mind raced with worry for Porro, for leaving Voss behind, and the threat of the Nano Nexus. As her thoughts spiralled, she made one more attempt to contact the Manticore. She reached for the com band which Logan had given to her and initiated a call, her heart pounding with anticipation.

The device chimed in a familiar tone, but was met with silence. Anika’s brows furrowed as she tried again, but the result was the same—no response from the Manticore. It was as though their ship had disappeared from the galactic network.

Frustration gnawed at her. She needed to take action. Without concrete evidence of Korrigan’s involvement in the Nano Nexus, she was powerless.

She slipped her naked body out of bed and dressed back into her dirty Manticore uniform, leaving the hazmat suit for a time when she might need it. One thing she could do was prepare herself for whatever lay ahead. Her thoughts turned to a stealth suit, a piece of technology that could prove invaluable in their mission.

Anika ventured into the bustling streets of Zyrona, where the city’s heartbeat pulsed through her senses.
