The 37-foot Tortugas Harbor lighthouse, also known as the Fort Jefferson harbor light, was lit on April 5, 1876. John Messina, the same keeper who tended the previous lighthouse, tended to the new light until 1889. Keepers worked here until 1912, when the lighthouse was automated. Garden Key’s new light was built inside the walls at Bastion C rather than on the interior parade grounds. The construction and appearance of the harbor light at Fort Jefferson is singular in the Florida Keys: a three-story hexagonal structure of boiler-plate iron (thick plate iron used for boilers).
