CHAPTER 6

It hadn’t been easy avoiding Ty while living on the same property. But Jule had done it. For five days. Helped by Ty who seemed to be making himself as scarce to her as she was making herself to him. Not that she didn’t wonder how he and Panther were doing. Hope that the poor kitty wasn’t spending too much of his time in the carrier or cooped up in the small show-room apartment while Ty was in the workshop. It wasn’t her responsibility to check up on him. Ty was a grown man. A grown man who feared cats. Her urge to check on him and Panther was concern for the kitten, not Ty. Yeah.

Then why did her mind keep flashing her back to Saturday every time she heard or saw his truck pull in or out? The vulnerability Ty had radiated when Panther patted his check had crashed down on her as much as his actual weight when he’d flung his arm around her shoulders for support. The vulnerability that he’d strained unsuccessfully to hide from her. Had she pushed him too hard too fast? Or was her attraction to him affecting her reaction to his vulnerability and the way his arm around her had felt so natural, so welcome.

Jule cleared her mind and pulled up the record for her first client of the day on her laptop. A few minutes later, the door to her office opened. She put on her professional face. “Good morning,” she greeted her client. “How did this week go?” Her business day had begun.

An hour later, Jule sat in her office, tapping her finger on the arm of her chair and her foot on the floor under the coffee table in front of her. Her next appointment had cancelled, and she didn’t have another scheduled until afternoon. With nothing but busywork to do, her thoughts went back to Ty.

Had she overwhelmed him? Been too optimistic thinking he could conquer his fears himself. He certainly had the determination. But he hadn’t been able to conquer it up until now. Maybe the financial motivation was what he’d needed. And he wasn’t alone. She had that kernel of something inside her that wanted his presence in her life. She could help even if he was simply her neighbor not a client. Maybe especially since he wasn’t a client.

Her office phone rang, stopping the circuit she was running in her head. “Dr. Hill,” she answered.

“Jule,” the receptionist said, “some of us are ordering Mexican for lunch. You want in?”

“No thanks.” The way her stomach was churning over Ty and his cat, a spicy lunch had no appeal.

“Okay.”

“Wait.” Jule caught the receptionist before she hung up. “Is Jon free?”

“Let me check.” The sound of computer keys clicking sounded in the background. “He’s free until 11:00.”

“Thanks.” Jule hung up and walked up the hall to Jon’s office. She hadn’t planned to talk with him about her idea yet, since the only experience she had helping athletes was personal, not professional.
