Until he took my hand on the way out of the restaurant.
My face flooded with heat, and my whole arm tingled as if heâd plugged my fingers into a socket. He held it for a moment, and then a second later, he dropped it as if he suddenly realized what heâd just done. I kept my lips pinched together as we weaved through the tables and out the door into the warm summer night.
His touch lingered on my skin, heating it from only the memory. How easy it had been for him to touch me. Heâd held my hand so many times in the past that, for a moment, I hadnât even realized that it had been a mistake.
A mistake I wished heâd do again.
Walls. I need walls.
The waves roared in the distance, and a light breeze brushed my bare arms. I shivered, but when Chris glanced back at me, I stilled. The last thing I needed was him offering me his suit coat. I had willpower, but if I was wrapped up in something that had his scent, that held his warmth, that willpower would be as fleeting as the light from a firefly.
We walked along the path for a few minutes, ducked under a low-hanging
branch, and then the stone path disappeared and my feet sunk into the soft, white sand.
âHang on.â I reached down and slipped off my shoes.
âGreat idea.â Chris did the same, rolling up his pant legs and tucking his socks into his shoes. He took my heels out of my hand and tucked them under the tree.
âIf thereâs a spider in there when we come back, youâre buying me new shoes. Iâd never be able to wear those again,â I said, trying to lighten the mood. Weâd been so serious tonight that the desire to elevate it overcame me.
He chuckled, the sound was familiar and yet new. There was a depth to it that hadnât been there before. Dare I say it was a manly sound? I put the brakes on those thoughts and started toward the water.
âWait up,â he called after me.
I broke into a run and laughed over my shoulder. âFirst one to the water wins.â
The takeout bag hit the sand, and I giggled inside as I pictured the sad state of my lasagna. I didnât care. I wasnât a mom tonight. I wasnât Nurse McKnight. I was just Penny. Free and fun. The girl who could run into the surf and not care about the laundry sheâd have to do later.
My walls were heavy and exhausting. I was tired of caring so much. They would still be there in the morning. My past could haunt me tomorrow.
Tonight, I was going to be free.
Chris passed me with his jaw set in determination. Iâd forgotten his competitive nature. I kicked into high gear, my feet sliding in the sand, but he beat me to the water, turned around, and splashed me. I squealed as the cold drops splattered my front.
He pulled back, a look of horror on his face.
