Chapter Five

‡

Bastian didn’t let her tug free inside the gate.

“I thought I’d go up and shower,” she said thinly. It was part stalling, part final inspection. This was so much more of a big deal than she’d wanted it to be.

“Let’s do that together,” he said, freeing the dog and drawing her toward the porch steps.

She dragged her feet and he held her in front of him, ducking his head to look her right in the eyes, all of him shades of gray in the filtered light from the street.

“I’m nervous, too,” he said.

“Really?” Why did that make it easier to let him draw her up the stairs and into the laundry room? He was supposed to be the confident one that she could place her trust in.

He only gave her a look as they kicked off their shoes and settled the dog, then he drew her through the kitchen toward the hall.

“I can’t have sex in my parents’ bedroom. I draw the line,” she told him.

“I think I’m in your old room, if the poster for High School Musical is anything to go by.” He entered and flicked on the light.

She paused at the door, taking in her girlish room with its dated furniture, its bookshelves stuffed with teddy bears and Sweet Valley High novels and the twin bed with pink linens. A bag with a drugstore logo sat unashamedly in the middle of the mattress.

She flicked her gaze to the poster of her heart throb. “So if I call you ‘Zac,’ you’ll understand,” she teased.

Bastian paused in closing the blinds. “Don’t you dare.” His voice was tinged with humor, but so possessive and intent, it made her shiver in the best possible way.

He plugged in the string of Christmas lights so the pinpoints of color sparkled against the vanity mirror, then he came across to her and turned out the light before backing her across the hall into the bathroom.

“We don’t have to—I was just—”

“Oh, sweetheart, you’ve got me picturing you soapy and naked now. I have to see it.” He left the light off so the bathroom was lit only by the dull orange nightlight.

She bit her lip, leaning on the counter as he started the tub running then switched the water up to spray from the head. He straightened and turned to look at her as he began pulling his clothes off.

When she only watched, he paused in opening his jeans. “This is the right time to change your mind, but please say you haven’t.” He almost sounded like he was pleading, which made her smile.

“I’m just being shy. And I like looking at you,” she admitted softly.

He finished stripping, kicked his pants away and stood tall. Hard. Oh dear. She licked her lips, both intrigued and mildly terrified by the fierce shape of him.

Her hand lifted hesitantly as he approached and she took his thick shaft in a gentle grip. “I’ve never really—” she started, but he interrupted her.

“We need to agree on something,” he said, smoothing her hair back so he could tug open the ribbon of her shirt and start on the buttons.
