Eventually a compromise was achieved whereby Clauberg was given facilities within the new camp at Auschwitz–Birkenau, closer to his clinic than Ravensbrück was, where he experimented on young married Jewesses selected from the transports that were, by then, arriving from all over Europe.112 Later his experimental block was moved to the main camp at Auschwitz.

At some time in that summer of 1941 Höss was ordered to report to Himmler in Berlin. Since Himmler spent a great part of his time after the launch of ‘Barbarossa’ in his ‘field headquarters’ near Hitler’s command post in East Prussia it seems possible that Höss saw him in June at a date before the 22nd. There Himmler told him the Führer had ordered the Endlösung of the Jewish question. ‘We – the SS – have to execute the order,’ and he added that since the existing liquidation sites in the east – by which he must have meant the T4 killing centres and the mobile gas-van Kommando – did not have the capacity for the intended large-scale actions, he had decided to use Auschwitz, ‘first on account of the favourable position in regard to communications, secondly because the area that has been decided on there lends itself to easy isolation and camouflage’. He had intended, he said, to appoint an HSSPF to oversee the task but had decided against it because of the conflicts of responsibility that would ensue; Höss must undertake it himself.113

It is a hard, tough task which demands the commitment of the whole person without regard to any difficulties that may arise. You will be given details by Sturmbannführer Eichmann of the RSHA who will come to see you in the near future. The departments taking part will be informed at the appropriate time. You have to maintain the strictest silence about this order, even to your superiors. After your discussion with Eichmann send me plans of the intended plant immediately. The Jews are the eternal enemies of the German people and must be exterminated. All Jews we can reach now, during the war, are to be exterminated without exception. If we do not succeed in destroying the biological basis of Jewry, some day the Jews will annihilate the German Volk.114
