Letâs HIIT the Workouts!
Chapter 16
Pre-Exercise Fundamentals
I want you to really enjoy exercise and commit to making it a part of your lifestyle. Before you jump in, however, I want to briefly go over some guidelines that will help ensure that your exercise program is safe and fruitful.
Get Physician Clearance before Starting Your Workouts
Any type of exercise is challenging to your body. Since I cannot individually screen you to determine your current fitness level, as a first and very important step, please check with your physician or health practitioner before starting these exercise workouts. Itâs important for you to get a clearance from your doctor before you begin any newâor differentâtype of exercise training program. Doing so will ensure that you are ready to embark on your new life of fitness and health. And if youâre not ready yet, your doctor can help you figure out how to get ready.
Wear Proper Exercise Gear for Your HIIT Workouts
Every one of the HIIT workouts in this book can be done on almost any piece of aerobic exercise equipment. This versatility is one of the great advantages of HIIT trainingâit offers something for every enthusiast. This means each workout can be done walking, jogging, running, biking, elliptical striding, swimming, rowing, stair stepping, and/or on any type of cardio machine. Whatever exercise mode you select, take care in choosing your workout gear, because it will definitely influence the success of your workout. Your exercise clothing should be all about fit and comfort. If you decide to buy some new outfits, go ahead and choose clothing with some of your favorite colors. YesâI want you to enjoy these workouts in fitness gear that functions well, looks great, and empowers you to exercise. If you plan on biking and/or swimming, make sure you get the specific types of clothing for these activities. For most of your other workouts, choose exercise gear that fits well and allows you to stay cool. Some light, breathable exercise-friendly fabrics with good stretch are nylon, polyester, spandex, and bamboo pulp. Cotton and cotton blend clothing is fine if you donât sweat that much; however, when you do sweat a lot, cotton clothing sticks to the body and becomes heavy. I often encourage fitness enthusiasts to go to a sporting goods store if thereâs one in their area, since this will allow you to see some of the different workout clothing options and try them on for fit. This also gives you a chance to speak with a qualified sales representative who may have good opinions on what works (and what doesnât). Make sure you wear supportive undergarments, such as a support bra, while doing your workouts. Undergarments provide support, lessen discomfort, and allow movement flexibility. Depending on the season and where you live, you may need to add a little layering if you exercise outside during the winter, or even during early morning or late evenings workouts during fall and spring.
Your Footwear Boosts the Workouts
When it comes to footwear, particularly new
