Boxing

I doubt that by now you’ll be surprised to learn you can carry out HIIT protocols while boxing. Depending on the kind of day you’ve had, boxing may even be your preferred choice of workout.

All you need is a heavy bag and some gloves, which by the way I strongly recommend for safety reasons. All gyms will possess these items though purchasing your own pair of gloves may provide you with the extra incentive to give this superb training mode a fair try.

Boxing is ideal for those who may have picked up lower body injuries or who are undergoing rehabilitation anywhere in the lower body.

However, boxing can still be potentially hazardous if correct technique is not utilised. For this reason, I suggest learning proper punching techniques before pounding your fists into a heavy bag at full force. Many health clubs have boxing classes, most commonly Boxercise, but failing that there are hundreds of online videos which demonstrate correct punching techniques. These techniques are often better seen and demonstrated than read about.

There’s no need to punch the bag at full force, as simply tapping the bag or punching with medium power is still incredibly intense and carries far less risk of injury. Though feel free to mix in a few hard blows to add variety. And don’t forget, you can also add in kicks too. Boxing is a serious workout and so you will feel the burn within seconds.

For recovery periods, it’s likely that continuing to punch the bag will be too intense. Instead I suggest jogging on the spot, walking or jogging round the room or light skipping.
