“There is a great deal wrong with New York City.”

An issue devoted to planning the future city did not shy away from urban problems. “Greatest of all is the problem of the slums,” wrote the editors. “Traditionally they have offered a route to something better in life, but no longer do they seem to. The blacks and Puerto Ricans who are crowded into them have been finding the way blocked in a way groups before did not.”

For an entire year, New York City was riveted by the story of Son of Sam.

Robert Daley, a former deputy police commissioner, wrote about why it took so long to catch David Berkowitz: the endless paperwork, the slow process of sifting through paper records and interviewing tipsters. In the end, the killer was found by old-fashioned means: He’d got a parking ticket near the site of one of the murders, and police were able to trace the car back to him.
