Fourteen

“Y ou would not believe the shit this woman did,” I said as Felicia stared at me, round-eyed.

We were parked at our usual table at Java Jive. She’d called me at eight, hoping to meet for breakfast. We hadn’t seen each other since I’d agreed to be her girlfriend, which sucked on general principle and because it was The Order’s fault.

But, damn, I was tired. Ash and I hadn’t left the club until almost three in the morning. Felicia called at eight. FML, you know?

“What was Ash’s reaction?” she asked as she popped another piece of muffin into her mouth.

“Ha! Trying not to be embarrassed,” I said. “I swear, this guy is a sex-demon, and I don’t think he’s ever been laid. He’s got Shy Guy Syndrome, you know?”

Felicia nodded and grinned. I sucked down a little more coffee.

“After awhile, Candy stopped looking at him,” I continued. “She figured out I was the one giving the orders, and he was almost ashamed to watch. So she just looked at me.”

“And did she . . .”

“Yes!” I said, slapping my palms down enthusiastically on the table. “Holy shit, Felicia! It was unlike anything I’d ever seen. She got it all over Ash’s pantleg.”

Felicia’s eyes went wider. I shook my head at the memory of the performance. It had definitely been a very weird night.

“How can that be legal?” she said.

“It’s not,” I replied. “Either the cops are on the take, or Dulac knows when they send in undercover agents and makes sure nothing happens.”

“It’s got to be the first one. It’d be too hard to fool them all the time.”

I nodded and drank more coffee. It was good, but it was no match for exhaustion.

“So did you guys get any leads?” Felicia asked.

I sighed and rubbed my eyes. Partly, it was because I was wiped out. But mainly, I felt guilty about ditching Felicia for a kink club, only to come away with nothing.

“No,” I admitted. “It was a strange experience. We know Dulac owns the club, but we didn’t see anything that looked like vampire activity. And we didn’t see him at all. We’re thinking he uses the club as a sort of recruiting center. Probably the staff watches the patrons, and those who exhibit the right – What? Signs? – get invitations to the more exclusive club, where the murders are taking place.”

“So does that mean it’s a dead end?”

“Not necessarily. Ephraim wants us to go back tomorrow night. He figures we may have to visit a couple times, become regulars, before Dulac or his agents mark us as people to invite into the inner circle.”

Felicia frowned. She played with the remains of her muffin. Shit. This was the part I’d been dreading, the conversation I knew we’d have.

“I don’t know, Sassy. This feels weird.”

“I know,” I said.

Bad choice.

“You know?” she said. “You know it’s weird, but you’re doing it anyway?”

“Felicia,” I soothed. “Nothing happened. I promise.”

“Sassy! You’ve been to strip clubs two nights in a row. At the first one, you nearly got killed by a vampire.
