Air hissed from between Narita’s teeth as searing pain lanced at her shoulder blade. She had caught a claw across her back and now had to suffer the joys of Peetare stitching her skin back together.

“It would hurt less if you sat still,” he whispered as he worked.

The man had been a whirlwind of activity, motivating the struggling men and breathing a fresh breath into the battle. None of that endeared him to her at the current moment, however.

Her armor lay beside her, removed to allow the priest better access to her wound. The claw had sliced through her leather backplate like a blade through water. Her shirt hung in tatters, held chastely to her chest with her hands.

Her body shuddered as the gut was pulled through her skin to tighten the wound. The sensation boiled the juices in her stomach threatening to spill what little food she’d managed to consume onto the forest floor.

“Fighting with this wound will undo everything I have managed to accomplish through your fidgeting.”

Her eyes rolled to the top of her head. “I’m sorry my normal reaction to you threading gut through my flesh impeded your work.”

“Commander,” he said with a long-suffering sigh, “if you wish to ruin my work by throwing yourself headlong among the grinlo, there is little I can do about it. Just don’t expect a priestess to stitch you back together.”

She felt an urge to laugh at the foolishness but the priest rammed the needle through her skin yet again, cutting her breath off before it could escape her lips.

Darkness had long since crept in, surrounding them in shifting white mist. It left a damp layer and chilled her skin from the excitement of battle.

But still her muscles twitched in anticipation. She let her eyes close as Peetare worked; it would likely be the only rest she would get. She pushed the continuous din of battle from her mind, allowing her body to sink into itself. Despite the grumbling priest behind her, she still managed some form of rest but something snagged her attention. The sounds of battle had shifted. Something was happening.

The chaos of battle had churned into a boil. A mass of creatures had turned from her men and engaged an attack behind them. She jumped to her feet, ignoring the haughty huff from the priest behind her.

She raised her fist in the air, forgetting her torn shirt and letting it fall loose around her waist. “Push the line!”

Men rushed past her—injured, exhausted, broken, but all willing to throw their lives away for her. She couldn’t see the men beyond the line, whoever fought to get to them. But she knew her men would fight tooth and nail to get through.

Peetare shoved the tatters of her shirt against her chest and forced her back to the stool. “Your men are working, let me finish what I was doing,” he said. “Then you can go and rip out all of my good work if you want.”

Laughter bubbled out of her lips and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
