While Donovan finished up, Peter slipped into the chiefâs office to wait.
It didnât take long. Donovan blew in and closed the door. âIâm glad youâre here,â he said putting his notes down on the desk. âTell me. Where are we with the investigation?â
Peter told him about the interviews with Cindyâs mom and friend.
âSo you think she wasnât actually at the dinner?â Donovan settled in his chair.
âWeâve questioned many of the guests, and no one saw her there. Plus, her clothes suggest she wasnât a guest, unless she changed first. Based on what I heard from her best friend, I think she followed someone, waited until they came out, and then trailed them to the warehouse.â
âDid they say who she might have been following?â
âNo, but Dominic Rossetti was there that night.â
Donovan sat up straighter. âThatâs interesting. Have you questioned him yet?â
âYeah, but we canât prove a link existed between them. Same with his smug business manager, Carlo Litzi. Iâd sure love to knock the cocky smile off his face. Heâs dirty, and he knows I know it. But he also knows I canât prove it.â Peter tapped the arm of his chair. âWe might be able to lean on Rossetti. He was nervous, I can tell you that much.â
Donovan peered into Peterâs eyes. âKeep me informed. Internal Affairs and the mayor are breathing down my neck. We have to find something soon. Since Markâs awake, theyâll want to move on an arrest warrant.â
Peter jerked in his chair. âA warrant? They want to arrest Mark, the guy with the perfect record. The guy they loved for taking down the pusher in the same ring weâre looking for now. Does the mayor know how ridiculous this is?â
âInternal Affairs feels they have a solid case with the cash and the unlicensed gun. Unless Mark can explain it, thereâs nothing I can do. In all probability, they wonât tell me when they arrest him.â Bitterness tinged every word. âThey might be kind enough to inform me after the fact.â
Five minutes later, Peter slammed out of the station and accelerated out of the parking lot. How could the department believe Mark would arrest one dealer but save the others? It didnât make sense. It was a quick solution, and they didnât care if it was wrong.
He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. How could he keep them from arresting Mark? Even if they eventually found him innocent, people would think he did it and the department covered it up. And later he would remember that the people heâd worked so hard to serve had turned on him. It couldnât happen. Peter couldnât allow it to happen. He had to do something, but what? What was he missing?
