HEATHER

You know that tingly little feeling

you get when you like someone?

That is your common sense leaving your body.

~ Unknown

Rene has been here again all day today.

I’m not complaining. I should be. He’s worn me down with his unexpected kindness, his flirting, and the way he listens when I talk. I never expected him to be so thoughtful or perceptive. I guess the latter trait goes with being a flirt—you have to learn to read the room, and every woman in it. But that’s not really fair. While Rene is kind to every woman he sees, and many of them blush or swoon under his attention, he’s never been inappropriate. If anything, he’s reserved most of his laser focus for me. And it’s making me crazy. I shouldn’t be spending so much time thinking about a man who will be leaving to live over four thousand miles away.

Rene left for the afternoon. He’s taking Nate out to ice cream.

Before they left, Nate said, “I’m gonna show you all the best spots in Harvest Hollow.” As an afterthought, Nate looked at me and asked, “Can I, Mom?”

I said yes without a second thought. And now the two of them are out touring around while I’m covering the rest of the day here until closing. I had another interview this afternoon. A young woman named Adohi came in. She’s an artist and needs to find what she calls a “day job” to support herself. I know most people don’t plan to be a barista for life. Adohi seems reliable, so I hired her to start next week. I might even get a whole day off once she’s trained.

The bell over the door tinkles and I look up to see my sister walking in.

“Hey, you!” I walk over to pull Tasha into a hug.

She’s beaming with that special glow of mid-pregnancy hormones. She’s actually been exuding this quiet radiance ever since she and Pierre decided to stay married. Love looks good on my sister.

“How are you holding up?” Tasha clasps my shoulders and holds me at arm’s length so she can study my face.

“I hired someone today. She starts next week. The storm may be nearly over—this time.”

“You look tired.”

“Thanks?”

“And beautiful. But tired. I wish you would have told Melanie and Stan about the situation. But you’re stubborn when it comes to accepting help.”

“I am not! I even let Mom come in twice.”

“As if you could have stopped her.”

“Right?”

We walk toward the back counter on instinct.

“You should try this new blackberry-citrus tea I just got in.”

“Um. Yes, please. That sounds amazing.”

I step behind the counter and Tasha leans on the front while I brew her a cup, then we walk to a table along the wall.

“Sit with me. It feels like forever since we’ve talked.” She slips into a chair and looks up at me.

“It’s been forever since I’ve talked to any adult—besides Rene.”

Why, oh why, did I bring him up to Tasha? She’s going to be like a doberman with a steak.

Tasha takes a careful sip of her tea and wags her eyebrows.
