“Go to a mirror, let me see you.”

Zhou was floating in the corner of Violet’s S-Lens, seeing through her eyes as they spoke. Violet walked over to the full-length mirror in her room, one that stretched all the way the ceiling, encased in leaf gold.

“Breathtaking,” Zhou said as he saw her.

It was Bracket Night, when the teams would find out who they would face in the first round of the tournament, which kicked off next week. A team of hair, make-up and clothing stylists had just left Violet’s room after a marathon session, and she had ended up with her hair done way up, her pale skin glowing on top of a shoulderless violet dress, which her stylist thought was cute, given her name. Violet had learned to stop arguing with these people at this point, as they were among the most fearsome CMI had on staff. She could boss around Glasshammer guards more than she could her stylists. She had to admit they were good at their jobs, she did look great. She tucked a loose strand of hair back behind her ear.

“This is what I envisioned when I tasked with you with this mission,” Zhou continued, his scarred face wearing a thin smile. “A new face for China. Young, strong, the envy of all.”

“I hardly stand out here,” Violet said, casting a glance to the television in the corner. It showed the combatants who had already arrived at the party, a lavish, black-tie affair. The coverage was focused on women like Celeste Rousseau and Ana Sophia Almeida who were showstopping in cerulean and scarlet, respectively. Even Valeriya Volodin looked like a runway model in sheer black, though her face was always twisted into a something resembling permanent sneer.

Violet adjusted the million-dollar opal necklace diving down the front of her chest. A personal gift from Crayton, the butler (and security detail) who brought it had assured her. She wore it in order not to make waves, but it felt ridiculous to flaunt something so opulent when her people were starving back home. But that was the goal, she supposed. To inspire them. To show that China was rising once more.

“All eyes will be on you,” Zhou said. “As they should be. They already adore you, and they will love you even more once you cut down whoever lies in your path.”

Japan was one thing, but Violet was not convinced that she’d ever get an American crowd on her side. But people did love Sang, she supposed.

“I should go, I have to meet up with my ‘parents’ beforehand,” Violet said, referring to the MSS agents who had arrived to play her mother and father. This was also the beginning of family visitation, a final few days when the fighters could see their loved ones before half of them were executed in the arena.

“I wish I could be there myself,” Zhou said. “But alas, it is impossible.”

Impossible because the last time you were here you blew up the Colosseum, Violet thought, but held her tongue.
