CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Marcus dangled helplessly in mid-air, flailing his arms and kicking his legs wildly. The frigid air was thick with tension, and no one moved, shocked by the bizarre event.

Lex shook it off first. “Hang on, Marcus!” He raised his laser and aimed above the tree branch behind Marcus. His initial shot resulted in no change, and he cursed under his breath and adjusted his aim to point at the branch.

It snapped with a loud crack, and Marcus plummeted to the ground. He flopped into the snow after the invisible creature released its grip and leaped to another tree—or so they assumed, based on the snow it kicked up in its wake.

Ike rushed to Marcus and helped him up. “Couldn’t you have thought of a less painful way to get me down?” Marcus grumbled, rubbing his aching back.

Ike snorted. “I can think of more painful ways. Probably best that Lex got there first.”

With Marcus back on his feet, they regrouped. There was no further sign of the invisible creature, but it would be back. Nothing was ever easy on Heaven’s Peak.

Lex and the other Talent students pulled goggles from their packs and slid them on. “Does every Talent student have a pair of goggles as part of their kit?” Ike asked.

Lex chuckled and adjusted his. “Creating them became an unofficial part of initiation. A rite of passage.”

Ike raised an eyebrow. “And we Strength students are all about who can punch the hardest, right?”

Lex looked sideways at Ike with a grin. “As much as I’d like to razz you, we’re gonna need those skills in a second.”

The three Talent students turned on their thermal vision and scanned the trees for the creature’s hasty, erratic movements. “It’s fast,” Lex complained. “I barely glimpse it before it’s gone again.”

A nearby snowbank exploded into powder. Two mace-wielding Strength students sprang into action, but their powerful swings only connected with a tree and the ground. Amid the flying splinters and snow, the invisible monster let out an ear-piercing shriek and retaliated by knocking the two Strength students down…and they still couldn’t see it.

The rest of the Strength students charged, weapons aloft, eager to protect their fallen comrades. Lex yelled after them, “Wait! We need a plan!” but his words fell on ears deafened by adrenaline.

The beast easily evaded their strikes and wove through the group like a phantom, not only invisible but also intangible. It landed powerful blows on each student and left them battered and disoriented. The Talent students struggled to keep track of the creature and relay its position quickly enough to be of use.

Ike, who had stayed behind to tend the injured Marcus and was watching the fight carefully, noticed something unusual. He saw faint tracks in the snow where the creature had been, indicating that the beast, despite its might, was light on its feet.

Lex shouted a warning that the creature was heading Ike’s way, so Ike positioned himself to cover Marcus and watched for movements. When he spotted a footprint forming a few feet away, his instincts took over.
