“SO HOW LONG HAVE YOU known Paul?” After spending a few moments admiring the elegant planting arrangements in Maggie’s garden, Claire was beginning to cast around for something else to talk about to keep the other woman occupied. She needn’t have bothered, because as soon as they were out of earshot of the house, Maggie began a detailed inquisition. “I mean, I know I haven’t seen him much since he and John stopped working together, but you know, they were close for a while. I thought I knew about any potential women in Paul’s circle. Not that he would ever be drawn on it.” She rolled her eyes. “So have you known each other a long time?” Maggie’s pale features lit up with curiosity.

“Erm, no. Not very long,” Claire said. A little over twenty-four hours.

“And where did you meet?”

Claire fumbled with the hem of her jacket, not sure how to explain to her how she and Paul had met. He saved my life. Too dramatic. We met at a cemetery. Too morbid. She didn’t want to lie to a woman who had been nothing but welcoming to her, but on the other hand, she also didn’t know how much to trust her. Paul seemed reticent about trusting her husband, and although Maggie seemed to be completely in the dark about John’s involvement – whatever that involvement was – in anything surrounding Claire’s father’s death, not to mention the current threat to Claire’s own life, she still wasn’t sure how much she should risk opening up. And she certainly didn’t want to drag the poor woman into danger.

“He’s, ah, he’s helping me with a project.” That wasn’t a lie.

“So...?” Maggie asked, grinning at her.

In spite of herself, Claire felt a smile creeping up her own face.

“So?” she replied, innocently. She may have only known Maggie for minutes but she recognized the interest in the other woman's face. It was just like her neighbor's had been, constructing a relationship that as yet barely existed. Maggie had matched Claire and Paul up in her mind and wanted to see if the feelings she thought she had noticed were really there, at least as far as Claire was concerned. How could she answer that without admitting to Maggie what she was reluctant to admit even to herself?

“Paul certainly seems to be very fond of you,” Maggie said, glancing back over her shoulder to the house.

“Does he?” The question was out before Claire could stop it.

“Ha!” Maggie crowed. “I knew it. I knew you were interested in him.”

“No, I –” Claire tried to protest, but Maggie laid a calming hand on her forearm.

“Oh, don’t worry, I think it’s wonderful,” she said, smiling warmly at Claire. “Paul is a good man, and he deserves someone nice. I think the two of you will be very happy together.”

The two of us. Claire couldn’t help but smile at Maggie’s turn of phrase. She had been so busily focused on finding out the truth about her father’s sudden death
