Chapter Fifteen
âIt is difficult to know at what moment love begins; it is less difficult to know that it has begun.â âHenry Wadsworth Longfellow
I donât do things like this, Vanessa thought as she looked over at Troy sleeping facedown on the other side of the bed. But, oh my goodness, Iâm so glad I did this.
She wanted to giggle madly at her own thoughts and the complete lack of the usual regrets that followed an impulsive decision like the one sheâd made last night when sheâd asked Troy to stay. His car was parked outside, announcing to her mother and the rest of the world that heâd spent the night, and Vanessa couldnât care less.
That, too, was not like her.
After the best sex of her life, she couldnât spare the brain cells to worry about the implications or work up the usual level of concern about potential family teasing/ridicule over her stepping so wildly out of character.
Maybe it was time for such a thing, since playing it safe hadnât worked out so well for her. She was still single at thirty-two after expecting to be married with children by now. Her âcareer,â such as it was, had flamed out, and she had no idea what was next for her. Most interesting of all was that the ever-present anxiety that kept her wired so tightly all the time was nowhere to be found this morning.
She stretched her arms over her head, took a deep breath and released it slowly, jolting when a warm hand landed on her belly.
âMorning,â he muttered.
âMorning.â
âWhat time is it?â
âWho cares? Youâre on vacation, and Iâm unemployed.â
He moved closer to her, put his arm around her and rested his head on her chest. âThank you for the reminder that I have nowhere to be and nothing to do except this.â His tongue found her sore nipple and gently stroked it until it stood up, ready for more of his special brand of magic.
Vanessa gasped as she ran her fingers through his thick dark hair, wanting to hold him in place even as she wondered if she could take any more than sheâd already gotten. Never in her life had she been so uninhibited with a man, and as the memories of the night before came flooding back, she still couldnât find it in her to be embarrassed, shocked or anxious.
Who had time for such concerns when a hot, sexy, sweet, caring man was firing her up for the fourthâor was it fifthâtime?
âWeâre out of condoms,â she reminded him, and yes, sheâd robbed her brotherâs stash, which was yet another indication of just how crazy last night had gotten.
âWe can be creative,â he said as he kissed a path from her breasts to her belly and below.
âIf weâd been any more creative, someone would be dead.â
His low rumble of laughter had goose bumps erupting on the surface of her skin. He looked up at her with brown eyes ablaze with desire. âBest night ever.â
âReally?â
Nodding, he said, âSo far in first place as to have no competition whatsoever.
