Chapter 10

I was glad to be home and to be able to wash off the grit and grime and Los Angeles smog from my face. It felt heavenly to slip into a clean tee shirt and get ready for sleeping in my own bed. When I came home, Carly and Johnny Depp greeted me at the door as I just about collapsed on the couch upon entering my house.

“Tony called,” Carly said. “And some realtor called, she said to call her back as soon as you got home.”

“Great,” I moaned. “I’m too tired to call now.” I felt a fleeting pang of guilt as I thought of my fiancÈ. He deserved better than me, there was no doubt. I was a cheating, lying whore. Well, maybe not exactly a whore, but I felt guilty.

“Want to tell me about your drama? Seems Kat’s your best friend now,” she smirked.

“Carly, I feel sorry for her. I mean, she just needs a friend right now. You wouldn’t even believe her life story. I mean, enrolled in beauty pageants at age five, on the road with her mother doing commercials and shows since she was ten, recording her first album in the middle of her parents’ divorce when she was fifteen. An affair with a record producer who was thirty years older than her. She caught her mother giving a talent agent a blow job to get her on a television show.”

“I don’t remember that skank being on a show.”

“Exactly. Her mother was the one who did the whole casting couch stuff to get Kat ahead. It was her mother who slept with Jackson Maddox to get her that record contract with Radio House. Tough life. She feels like she can’t trust anyone. Such a hard life.”

“No shit.” Carly picked up a tabloid and paged through it. “How’s the wedding coming along? When do I get fitted for a hideously ugly dress I’ll never wear, G?”

I rubbed my temples. A headache was coming on, pressure in my neck was pinching my nerves all the way down my spine. I took a deep breath.

“I don’t know.”

“Shit. You don’t know? Mom said you were all freaky about the wedding. I thought she was drinking again and didn’t know what was going on.” She flung the magazine aside and leaned forward. “You breakin’ up with Tony?”

I kicked off my shoes. Johnny jumped out, his fluffy tail waving in the air like a white plume. I bit my lip as Carly pursed her lips and stared at me.

“Why do you ask?” I didn’t meet her eyes, which were burning holes in my head.

“You think I’m dumb? I see Tony gettin no love from you, sista.” She did that back and forth head thing then folded her arms across her chest and said, “Mmmm-Hmmmm. I got eyes.” And they were still on me like I was being interrogated by the police.

I felt the weight of my tongue in my mouth as I considered how to answer her. “Well. It’s not that I don’t love Tony.
