Chapter 10
I was glad to be home and to be able to wash off the grit and grime and Los Angeles smog from my face. It felt heavenly to slip into a clean tee shirt and get ready for sleeping in my own bed. When I came home, Carly and Johnny Depp greeted me at the door as I just about collapsed on the couch upon entering my house.
âTony called,â Carly said. âAnd some realtor called, she said to call her back as soon as you got home.â
âGreat,â I moaned. âIâm too tired to call now.â I felt a fleeting pang of guilt as I thought of my fiancÃ. He deserved better than me, there was no doubt. I was a cheating, lying whore. Well, maybe not exactly a whore, but I felt guilty.
âWant to tell me about your drama? Seems Katâs your best friend now,â she smirked.
âCarly, I feel sorry for her. I mean, she just needs a friend right now. You wouldnât even believe her life story. I mean, enrolled in beauty pageants at age five, on the road with her mother doing commercials and shows since she was ten, recording her first album in the middle of her parentsâ divorce when she was fifteen. An affair with a record producer who was thirty years older than her. She caught her mother giving a talent agent a blow job to get her on a television show.â
âI donât remember that skank being on a show.â
âExactly. Her mother was the one who did the whole casting couch stuff to get Kat ahead. It was her mother who slept with Jackson Maddox to get her that record contract with Radio House. Tough life. She feels like she canât trust anyone. Such a hard life.â
âNo shit.â Carly picked up a tabloid and paged through it. âHowâs the wedding coming along? When do I get fitted for a hideously ugly dress Iâll never wear, G?â
I rubbed my temples. A headache was coming on, pressure in my neck was pinching my nerves all the way down my spine. I took a deep breath.
âI donât know.â
âShit. You donât know? Mom said you were all freaky about the wedding. I thought she was drinking again and didnât know what was going on.â She flung the magazine aside and leaned forward. âYou breakinâ up with Tony?â
I kicked off my shoes. Johnny jumped out, his fluffy tail waving in the air like a white plume. I bit my lip as Carly pursed her lips and stared at me.
âWhy do you ask?â I didnât meet her eyes, which were burning holes in my head.
âYou think Iâm dumb? I see Tony gettin no love from you, sista.â She did that back and forth head thing then folded her arms across her chest and said, âMmmm-Hmmmm. I got eyes.â And they were still on me like I was being interrogated by the police.
I felt the weight of my tongue in my mouth as I considered how to answer her. âWell. Itâs not that I donât love Tony.
