Ceci gave a deep belly laugh as she lay back on the hospital bed, munching a slice of toast and jam and watching kidsâ TV. I tried not to pace as I waited for the doctor to come and see me and tell me what theyâd found. Sheâd had an ECG, along with a blood test that sheâd screamed blue murder about, and now I couldnât seem to stop my imagination running wild, thinking of all the horrible possibilities that might lie before me. The smell of disinfectant and alcohol hand gel made it impossible to relax, to forget that I was in a hospital. It was so surreal to think that a few floors below the room where I waited now, my husband lay unresponsive in a coma. How terrifying to have two members of my family under this same roof, their futures so tenuous, so uncertain.
I glanced at Ceci now, trying to feel reassured by the colour in her cheeks, her eyes alert and sparkling as she stared at the small screen above her bed. Daisy had texted to say that sheâd taken Rufus and Amelie home but that she hadnât been able to find Tristan, despite searching for over an hour. Sheâd been on the verge of calling the police when Iâd got a message from him saying heâd gone to see a friend and wouldnât be back for dinner. I was overwhelmed with relief to see his name flash up on the screen, but that relief had swiftly morphed into anger. Heâd disappeared just when we needed him most, exactly like his father.
Stepfather, I reminded myself. Maybe Tristan didnât even care what happened to us. To his sister. More and more I felt sure he wasnât reacting in an appropriate way to the news about Drew. And the only reason I could find for his apparent ambivalence was that despite years of being raised by the man, he still didnât feel like Drew was his dad. Could it be possible that his loyalties lay with a man who had done nothing for him, nothing to earn his trust or respect?
I wished heâd been by my side when Ceci had collapsed. He knew the routines far better than Daisy â how to distract the others so I could focus on helping her, making sure they werenât afraid â and he was surprisingly calm in a crisis. When weâd had a power cut during a storm a few days before Christmas last year, Amelie had been beside herself with terror, the sound of thunder rumbling ominously through the dark rooms of our home. Rufus, though he wouldnât admit it, was scared too and kept asking for his daddy, who was stuck on the Underground, unable to get back to us. And Ceci had lost control completely, thrown by the unwelcome interruption to her evening. I was running between the three of them, attempting to stop Ceci from pulling her own hair out by the roots while trying and
