THIRTY-ONE

ALISON

Mr. Microsoft had shafted her. Five properties, eight showings, and one botched marriage counseling session, and there was nothing to show for it. Alison could scream. And the worst of it was, it was her own fault. She knew what Peter was like; she should have never let him handle the exclusivity agreements after the first time he’d messed up, but afraid as she’d been to lose their business, she’d rushed things, had given Peter the benefit of the doubt, and now here she was—all that work for nothing.

“Other fish in the sea,” she muttered through her teeth, turning into the office parking lot. “Other. Fish. In. The. Sea.” She willed it to be true. She’d find a different account, a better one. If she got a head start reaching out to potential referrals today, she might even have something in the bag by the end of the week. You push on. Got a broken pinky toe, guess what? You can still pirouette. It’s all in how much you want it.

She’d work for a couple of hours, go get groceries, and then head home. She’d had to leave Tyler rather abruptly after their shower that morning and she needed to talk to him, tell him they’d do more sessions with Dr. Wezniak. She’d try harder. Maybe they could go out to dinner and celebrate her N.A.W.B.L. nomination. Good Lord, she’d almost forgotten about that. You win some, you lose some. That award was more important than another millionaire client in the grand scheme of things. As long as she won.

She parked and texted Tyler her plan and an ETA of 7 PM.

The clock on the dashboard showed 10:48 PM when she finally pulled into the driveway at home. The house was dark, and the night air smelled like rain. Where had the day gone? The hours had disappeared as she’d dug deep through client records, catalogued neighborhoods and listings, cross-referenced all of it. She’d reformatted her newsletter to include the award info and links to new properties for sale that might generate clicks. She’d done research on the property values for Mom’s houses and even some basic digging on Leah’s house. She’d brainstormed new lines of revenue, the possibility of hiring another agent for the team. And now it was late.

She was late.

With some trepidation, she pushed open the door from the garage to the mudroom and closed it as quietly as she could. If Tyler was asleep, there was no point in waking him up. The kitchen smelled like popcorn, and it made her stomach churn. Had she eaten at all today? She couldn’t remember.

She tiptoed into the kitchen and placed her purse on the island, then headed for the fridge. The cool light spilled out in a rectangle on the floor as she opened the door to examine its insides. Finding nothing appealing, she grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl and fetched the bread and peanut butter from the pantry. She’d always preferred mashed banana over jelly.
