Chapter Fifty

Crawling up the path, behind Dr. Chen’s van, was a Black Rock squad car.

Jack.

“You look like you could do with a cup of tea,” came a voice from down the hallway.

Tanya turned to see Asha and Katy walking toward them. She wondered if they had been watching the scene all along from the shadows.

Katy stepped up to Stacey.

“Come. We need to have a chat about Justin.”

Stacey shook her head.

“I came here to talk to the people who killed him and almost tried to kill my husband.”

Asha took her arm. Tanya let go of Stacey, and for the first time felt grateful for her friends’ presence.

“We have questions for the family too,” said Asha. “Why don’t we sit down and figure out a plan together?”

Stacey’s brow furrowed. “Who are you?”

“We’re a private investigator team,” said Asha, bringing out her business card.

Stacey took it with a frown.

“Justin called us a week ago,” said Katy. “He invited us to Black Rock to help him.”

Stacey’s shoulders dropped. She stared at the two women, her face scrunching in sorrow. She stepped toward them and clutched their arms.

“You talked to Justin?” she whispered. “What did he say?”

Linking their arms with hers, Katy and Asha led her to the kitchen.

Rafael hadn’t budged from his spot by the wall, frozen like a statue. It was like he was pretending he wasn’t there, traumatized by having a gun pointed at him.

Tanya shifted her gaze back to the vehicles driving up to the manor. The ferry must have been full that day. It seemed like everyone was arriving on the island.

The hearse stopped at the top of the driveway, and Jack parked his cruiser several yards behind it. Dr. Chen parked next to the hearse and waited inside, watching the undertakers take Honoree’s coffin out and carry it toward the manor.

Jack was having an animated conversation on the phone in his car. The frantic manner in which he was gesturing told Tanya whatever he was discussing wasn’t good news.

Dr. Chen stepped out of the driver’s side of the van and marched toward the front doors.

Though the physician was no longer in her clinic, she still had her white lab coat on. It made her look more officious and commanding, despite her petite stature. Tanya watched her approach the house, noticing the dark look on her face.

The doctor usually had on a stoic expression that it was hard to say if she was happy or sad, but now, a sinking feeling came over Tanya’s stomach.

Something’s wrong.

Dr. Chen stomped up the front steps behind the undertakers who were struggling to bring the heavy coffin up the steps.

When they were safely inside the house, she marched over to Tanya with a glare.

Tanya braced herself.

“I don’t care for Mr. Wood at all,” snapped Dr. Chen when she approached her.

“You talked to Monica’s husband?” said Tanya, relieved it wasn’t worse news than that.

“I called him to inform him of his wife’s death. That man has no manners at all. He swore at me.”

“Well—”

“He told me he’s happy she’s dead.
