It was Saturday morning, a week later, and Camille was a nervous wreck as she flitted around the loft. She straightened pillows, did the dishes, threw a load of laundry in the washer and looked at the clock for the ninth time since she had gotten out of bed. Cody would be here at one o'clock to drive her to his home on Long Island. She would be in his house, meeting his children, for the very first time. To say she was anxious would be a gross understatement—more like a basket case. The usually calm, stoic businesswoman was now a bundle of nerves. And all because of four precious young babies who had lost their mama.

When it was finally time to get ready, she looked through her closet and pulled out several articles of clothing, trying to find just the right thing to wear. She wanted to make a good impression. She decided casual would be best and finally opted for a pair of skinny jeans, a light green top and a pair of fashionable boots. She brushed her hair, letting it fall naturally around her shoulders, and applied a minimal amount of makeup. When the doorbell rang, she jumped up to answer it.

"Mmm, you look good," Cody said as he closed the door and kissed her.

"Do I pass inspection?" she asked.

"Baby, you always pass inspection with me. Quit obsessing. It's going to be okay. Are you ready to go?"

"As ready as I'll ever be, I guess. Do the children know I'm coming over?" she asked as they got onto the elevator a few minutes later.

"Yes, they do. Cam said it was about time I brought you around."

"And the little ones?" she asked apprehensively.

"Cayden just grinned, and Colleen jumped up and down."

"I'm almost afraid to ask what Caroline's reaction was."

He cleared his throat. "She sort of shrugged her shoulders and walked out of the room. I'm sorry, Camille. Just give her some time."

"I expected her to react that way. I'll just have to tread very carefully with her."

Cody drove effortlessly through the city. Before long, he was pulling into the driveway of a large two-story brick home. The grounds were beautifully landscaped, and the home was quite impressive from the outside. He took her in through the garage into the mudroom. From there, they walked into a kitchen any woman would love to have. It was large, with modern, stainless steel appliances. An island for working stood prominently in the center of the room, and the cabinetry was sparkling white. Black granite counters made for a thoroughly updated look, and a small breakfast nook was off to one side. She could imagine the children gathered around the table for an after-school snack on a cold winter's day.

Next, they walked through to the great room, where three of the children were glued to the TV set. A teenage boy who looked a lot like Cody stood up when they entered the room. He flipped off the television set and said, "Hi, I'm Cameron—Cam, for short.
