Fourteen

A clang startled Braelyn awake. The sounds of an elk echoed outside followed by the twitter of squirrels jabbering in the trees. A thicket of trees highlighted the bright blue sky. It was a whole other world out here. The smell of coffee drifted to her, and she relaxed. She was at the cabin with Drake. She was safe.

She climbed out of bed and followed the aroma of coffee. The sight of Drake making coffee made her halt. Even in a pair of well-worn jeans and a cobalt blue t-shirt, Drake still made her heart flutter.

Drake sent a smile her way and lifted the coffee kettle from the stove. “Morning. Have a seat.”

Braelyn stepped further into the kitchen and sat at the table.

Drake slipped a cup of coffee in front of her along with a plate of eggs and bacon. “Eat up.”

“How can I possibly eat all this?” She stared at the mountain of food.

“Same way you eat an elephant.”

Braelyn chuckled and sat with him. “One bite at a time.” Her laugh faded, and she looked up at him. “Look, last night—that shouldn’t have happened.”

The sparkle in Drake’s eyes disappeared, and he sank down into his seat. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I just—”

Drake’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen then rose from his seat and stepped out into the hall. Braelyn ate several bites of eggs. She hadn’t meant to hurt him. She just wasn’t ready for that yet. Was she?

When Drake didn’t come back, she followed the sound of his voice into the hall. Drake paced up and down the small entrance way. The tense set of his shoulders told her of his agitation.

He glanced at her and hung up.

“Is something wrong?”

He stopped his pacing and crossed his arms. “We need to get to the station right away.” Drake’s voice was all business now, his firm mouth set in a hard line.

“Do I need to pack up my things?”

“No, we’ll be back later.”

Braelyn slowly nodded then hurried to dress and grab her purse. She stuffed her book into the bag before she hurried out of the cabin and climbed into the already running truck.

Silence had reigned in the cabin, and Braelyn stared out at the passing scenery. It was really beautiful out here. It was a pity that she was seeing it under such terrible circumstances. Drake reached forward and turned on the radio. After the first few beats, Braelyn recognized their wedding song. Drake’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.

She leaned forward changing it to another station. A song by Servants of Sunrise, Drake’s band. Was the whole universe conspiring against her today? She blew out a breath, and a slight smile turned up the side of Drake’s mouth.

“You can’t win, Brae.” He turned up the volume and sang along.

The words lulled her back to a time where anything was possible and love seemed so simple. She faced Drake and said, “Thank you.”

Drake turned to her and raised an eyebrow. “For what?”

“For saving my life.
