Sailor

As I sip on my coffee and scroll through my phone, the last thing I am expecting to get is a call from one of the people I used to work with.

It’s been about two weeks since I left my job at the garage, and I haven’t heard a word from anyone. I figure that they were told to avoid getting in touch with me, and I don’t want to put anyone else in trouble on my account. It’s been hard enough for me as it is, and the last thing I need right now is the guilt of getting someone else fired, too.

So when I see that Ian, one of the guys I actually got on with at the garage, is calling me, I am sure that there must be some kind of mistake. I hover my finger over the ‘take call’ button, wondering if this is just going to be a butt-dial.

"Hello?” I answer finally, figuring that there’s no point in holding back. Might as well cut to the chase.

"Sailor," Ian replies, and I am surprised to hear how excited his tone is – what's up with him? Is he really that glad to know that I’ve lost my job?

"What’s up?” I reply. "Everything okay?"

"There was a guy here yesterday asking about you," He tells me. He’s always been the one who keeps his hands on the gossip of this place, and I’m not surprised that he’s the one who called me. But I am surprised to hear that someone was there talking about me.

"A guy?” I ask. "Who was it?”

"I’m not sure," he replies. "But he was the one who came in with that fancy car that you fixed up, the one who complained about the scratches on the paint or something..."

"Oh, shit, Gavin!” I exclaim. "What the hell was he doing there? Trying to get me fired again?”

"I don’t know, but he was getting right up in Toby’s face," he replies. "And one of the other guys was saying that he was trying to get you your job back."

"What the hell?” I demand. "He was doing what?"

"Yeah, maybe he’s been getting freaked at the thought of losing you your job," He replies. "Did you send him? Pay him off or something? Blow him for it…"

"No, nothing like that," I cut him off at once. I know that this is just his way of talking, but it pisses me off that he thinks that I would do something like that to get my job back. I’ve got my pride. Maybe it’s just been so long since I worked there that I am starting to get sensitized to the way they talk to me as a woman, especially now that I have a job working with people that actually seem to respect me.

"Whatever you did, it’s working," he replies. "He looked pretty pissed. And I haven’t seen Toby so mad in a long time."

"Wish I could have seen that," I mutter. I never liked Toby, and it kind of delights me to think of him annoyed.
