AVA STONE

He walked to the kitchen, returning with two small glasses and a mason jar full of some clear liquid. “This is my grandmother’s moonshine recipe,” he said, handing me a glass.

No way.

He poured us each some, clinked my glass, and took a healthy swig.

From my spot on the couch, I watched, afraid to follow suit.

He gestured with his chin. “Go ahead. Try a sip. It’s kind of like whiskey.”

“But it’s clear. Isn’t whiskey supposed to be brownish?”

He nodded. “Commercially produced whiskey is, for sure, because it’s been aged. But when whiskey comes out of the still, this is what it looks like.”

“That’s wild. And your grandparents used to make this?” I took a whiff. It wasn’t too bad.

“Yup. Although, over the years my father and then my brother and I improved the recipe. It’s not nearly as crude as what my grandmother made. C’mon now. Are you gonna try it?”

Might as well give it a shot. I was doing all sorts of other things for the first time.

I let a teeny bit pass my lips, and when it didn’t burn my mouth raw, I took a more substantial sip. But not a swig like Theo had.

I grimaced anyway. I couldn’t help it. I was more of a wine girl.

Theo laughed and took my glass. “Yeah, it’s an acquired taste. What did ya think?”

My throat was burning, but it wasn’t too bad. “It’s strange. It tastes like corn.”

“Yeah. That’s what it’s made of.”

“And you like it? Like you could drink it every night?”

He shook his head. “Oh hell no. We bust it out for special occasions. I could never drink this every day.”

Just then, there was a screech from outside the house, like a dog that might have rabies.

“Oh my god,” I said, bolting up straight, my heart pounding. “What the hell was that?”

I heard it again, but this time it lasted longer. “Did you hear that?” I hissed.

Exactly when I was thinking the mountains weren’t all that bad, some dangerous creature ruined it for me.

Theo took my hand. “It’s a coyote. Is this the first one you've heard since you’ve been here? They’re all over the place. He’s looking for his pack.”

Great. Just great. Coyotes all over. And these guys didn’t think the woods were dangerous?

Theo must have read my thoughts. “Ava, coyotes won’t bother you. Humans are way too big for them to mess with. I don't know if you realize this, but your life in the city is much more dangerous than it is here on Deep Water Mountain.”

The city is more dangerous than the mountains? Was he crazy?

But he had a point. I knew way more people who’d been mugged than had been attacked by coyotes. Or bitten by snakes.

So there was that.

“I feel safe here,” I said, relaxing back onto the sofa and hoping Theo would return to kissing me.

I hadn’t been with a guy in so long. There’d been one who’d pursued me hard, but the minute I’d slept with him, he’d ghosted me.

Fucker.

He tried to ghost me, I should say.
