“Here you are,” Drakkein offered her a stick with chunks of steaming white meat on it.

“Ooooo.” Hazel licked her lips as she eagerly took the offered stick with both of her hands. “It smells good.” Better than she would have expected roasted lizard to smell.

“Tastes even better.” He promised her as he took a bite of his own meat stick. “Mmmm.” He murmured as he chewed his bite and sent her a wink.

Taking a deep breath, Hazel bent her head to the side as she took a bite out of the topmost chunk of lizard meat. As she chewed, she nodded her head with pursed lips. The lizard creature was pretty good. It was lean, with a slightly gamey taste, but not overwhelming. The spices on the meat

Holding a hand up to her mouth, Hazel said, “I’m surprised we never thought about catching and eating these Grakids.” It would solve some of their issues with food reserves, and she was sure her people would rather eat lizard than nothing.

“They aren’t easy to kill, and we’ve lost several men over the years, but if you can manage to kill them, they provide a lot of meat.”

“Maybe you could teach my people how to hunt them someday.” She suggested, testing the waters for how he might feel about helping her people stay alive.

“Perhaps.” He agreed as he gobbled down his stick of meat and then threw the stick into a trash can.

Hazel quickly ate the rest of her lizard meat, and then flicked the stick into the trash… and then she noticed the attention she’d garnered. Aeci stood around her, their dark eyes wide as they studied her.

“I seem to be quite popular,” Hazel remarked, a bit disturbed by the attention, but also hoping this would be good for their two people. It would be good for them to grow used to seeing each other.

One of Drakkein’s leather wings flicked out, protecting her back as he took a more protective stance next to her. Some of the people quickly shook their horned heads and walked away, but others continued to stare unabashedly.

Slowly, Drakkein got them moving again, and now she had a good chance at studying the Aeci and their massive colony.

All of them had horns and wings, but the women possessed slightly smaller horns, which most of them had decorated by dyeing with different colors. A popular color seemed to be dyeing the tips in a dark purple, while others had gone for gold. Other women had chosen to use bracelets to glam up their horns. The women were also daintier than their male counterparts. The women were about her size, which made her feel a bit better. At least she wasn’t the shortest one in their colony.

Hazel caught a scent that had her mouth drooling. “What is that?” She said, hoping Drakkein would know of what she spoke.

Lifting his nose into the air, he took a whiff and then smiled. “One of my favorites.” He winked at her as he guided her over to another stall, his wing still outstretched behind her.
