“About Chocobunny,” Liza said, as she was leaving. I looked up and was startled by her pallid face. If she’d been withholding an apology, it seemed only because remorse was stuck in her throat, like a levee on the brink of disaster.

“It’s okay,” I said. “No worries.” And I meant it. I felt terrible for ever doubting her.

“Really, Liza, it’s okay. We found him,” I said. “I mean, we’re so lucky.” But when she turned to leave, her long shift finally over, it occurred to me that my luck and hers were not one and the same.
