Teens who have difficulty verbalizing their feelings may find it easier to express them on paper. Drawing is an effective way for them to gain control over their emotional pain and eventually eliminate it. When the loss is a death, drawing is especially important, because it allows them to actually see what their feelings look like. This action helps give them a sense of understanding and control.
Writing or journaling also is beneficial for those whose writing skills are developed. It is easier to express on paper the reality of whatâs happened and their fantasies about it. Writing a letter to the deceased person or even to God can be helpful. Encourage them to read their letters aloud and discuss what theyâve written, but remember to respect their privacy. The choice whether or not to share needs to be theirs. They may share more openly on social media (including such things as blogs) than in talking with you.
